BUILDING WORLDS: M(ART)KETPLACES

Year

Spring 2021

Studio
Mark Stanley

The building worlds studio was designed to interrogate our understanding of the built environment, what can be considered architecture, and enhance and expand our understanding of architectural typologies.

The NFT Marketplace

The NFT Marketplace serves as a physical market for solely digital goods - NFT (non-fungible token) Artwork - meant to exist as a celebration of the constancy of change and the online realm.

Hold up - what's NFT Art? “Non-fungible” more or less means that it’s unique and can’t be replaced with something else. For example, a bitcoin is fungible — trade one for another bitcoin, and you’ll have exactly the same thing. A one-of-a-kind trading card, however, is non-fungible. If you traded it for a different card, you’d have something completely different.

At a very high level, most NFTs (Non-fungible Tokens) are part of the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, like bitcoin, but its blockchain also supports NFTs, which store extra information that makes them work differently from an ethereum coin. NFTs can really be anything digital (such as drawings, music, your brain downloaded and turned into an AI), but a lot of the current excitement is around using the tech to sell digital art.

At the intersection of Sunset and Silver Lake sits an unassuming, wedge-shaped lot. This lot? The new home to the NFT Marketplace; an immersive, experience-based market for digital artwork and the Non-Fungiclub, a space set aside for artist residency and mingling, collaboration, and the experience of community.

The monolithic exterior serves as a blank canvas; one that is unassuming in the day time, but becomes an expression of the resident artist’s ethos as the sun sets, drawing passersby in with its constantly fluid appearance via projection mapping across the exterior.

The Third Floor

The resident artist's studio: where creators can gather, ideate, and create with a featured artist.

Digital Diversions

Immersive screen-based walls allow guests to interact with, enhance, and purchase digital artwork.

Precedent Work: Building Worlds

The studio was divided into three sections - investigation, subjects, and alternative marketplaces (above).

Below is an exploration of these concepts, which all stem from investigating an assigned aisle at a local grocery store.
